Hall of Fame Inductee Takes Residence in the Islands
A new resident of the Islands wears many hats: martial arts, geology, prospecting gemology, writing, public speaking, sketching – just to name a few. Prior to moving to the Islands this month, W. Dan Hausel had won international recognition in more than one profession and plans to continue his quest at being the best in many things.
Grandmaster of Seiyo Shorin-Ryu Karate and a 10th degree red belt (the highest rank in Okinawa karate), Professor Hausel teaches traditional martial arts for adults and teenagers. Traditional arts are quite different from sport and are designed for the positive development of the individual. Considered one of the top martial arts instructors in the world, he has been inducted into 12 Halls of Fame. Most recently the International Black Belt Hall of Fame in Malaysia recognized his unique instructional methods - previously other Halls of Fames had awarded him “Instructor of the Year”, “International Instructor of the Year”, and “Grandmaster Instructor of the Year”. Although of the traditional (non-sport) martial arts lineage, a few of his students have taken to the arena and competed with a very high success rate winning 47% gold, 27% silver and 20% bronze. His students also include two national champions.
Prior to moving to the Islands, Grandmaster Hausel taught at the University of Wyoming, the University of New Mexico, the University of Utah, private schools and health clubs. Certified in 18 martial arts with 8 different black belts, Dr. Hausel has taught karate, jujutsu, kobudo (Okinawan weapons), iado (sword), martial arts history, philosophy, self-defense for peace officers, for black belts, for the military, for airline travelers, airline attendants, rape prevention and has instructed various women’s groups in basic defense.
Gilbert was selected as his new home in a search for a Hombu (international training center). Being the world head of Seiyo Shorin-Ryu Karate, he has students located all around the world (see www.seiyo-shorinryu.org) and looks forward to finding a building suitable for adult classes and special interest groups.
In addition to being a martial artist of note, Hausel is also a well-known geologist who recorded dozens of mineral discoveries including several diamond deposits, one of the largest iolite gemstone deposits in the world (including the largest iolite gems ever found – a 1,750 carat gem and a giant 24,500 carat gemstone) along with significant gold, palladium, opal and other mineral deposits. During his career at the Geological Survey in Laramie, he became the most productive geologist in the history of the Survey publishing more than 500 publications including 10 books and mapping more than 650 square miles of complex geological terrain (see www.wsgsweb.uwyo.edu/metals/dan.asp).
His work won him worldwide recognition including induction into the 2001 National Rock Hound Hall of Fame, the American Biographical Institute’s Millennium Hall of Fame, Who’s Who in the West, Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in the World, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, 2000 Notable American Men, the 2001 Man of Science Award, the 2005 Archimedes Award, the Wyoming Geological Association’s Distinguished Service Award, and the American Association of Petroleum Geologists President’s Award.
He is also an artist. He became an artist quite by accident following the urging of a co-worker. Prior to 1990, he had never sketched. Now his sketches include a wide array of subjects - some have appeared in books, on book covers, on greeting cards and others have been highlighted by galleries and museums (see http://danhausel.com). He is also a popular and dynamic speaker and presented more than 400 talks at conventions and organizations on topics related to prospecting, diamond exploration, gemstones, gold, mining history and martial arts. He has also been sought by various companies, prospecting groups and universities to teach short courses on prospecting, economic geology and diamond exploration.
His current ambitions are focused on opening a martial arts training center somewhere around Gilbert where he would like to teach traditional martial arts to adults, teenagers, women’s groups and other special interest groups. But he is also working on the completion of a 500-page book on gemstone deposits and looking for an agent to promote his artwork. He is also talking to various people about the possibility of heading an exploration company to search for commercial diamond deposits in the US.
